Young people set to get Rogered

23 Feb, 2010 by admin

Young Labour has grave concerns about the future for youth in New Zealand following today’s news that ACT MP Roger Douglas’ members bill to reintroduce youth rates has been drawn and will be debated in Parliament.

The deceitfully titled Minimum Wage (Mitigation of Youth Unemployment) Amendment Bill will seek to put in place discriminatory wages for young people, changing the minimum wage for young people under 18, which will see youth being paid less for the same work as their older colleagues. Young Labour takes a different stance to Douglas’ outdated and disproved far-right rhetoric and thinks that lowering wages is not an acceptable way of dealing with an unemployment crisis. (more…)

ACT’s nuclear ships policy is MAD

Conor Roberts, President of Young Labour, responded scathingly today to the news that ACT MP Ken Shirley’s Private Members Bill, aiming to end the ban on nuclear ships visiting New Zealand, may soon be before Parliament.

If there one way to alienate young people this year he said, it was to buy a fight over New Zealand’s ‘Nuke Free’ status.

“ACT’s analysis of the MPs in Young Labour’s Fantasy Calendar adds a new and (mostly) humorous element to the calendar, which we’ve designed as a bit of light hearted fun.

“Sadly at times, ACT predictably descends into petty personal insults, particularly focused on the women and Maori MPs,” said Jordan Carter. (more…)

Young Labour slams right wing arrogance

Young Labour President Moana Mackey today slammed ACT leader Richard Prebble and National’s David Carter for their vitriolic attack on the integrity of students. “This again highlights their appalling lack of concern for youth issues,” Ms. Mackey said.

Both MP’s claim that Labour’s policy to ease the financial burden on students by reducing interest on loans for full time students and low income graduates, will entice students to play the stockmarket or take expensive holidays – costing taxpayers “over a billion dollars”.

“This about face by two parties who continually claim to support individual responsibility and accountability is amazing. Clearly National and ACT only trust individual decision making when it doesn’t cost the Government anything, or if they can make a profit out of it.” (more…)
