Minister Buying a Cheaper Future with Class-Size Increases

17 May, 2012 by admin

Following Education Minister Hekia Parata’s pre-budget announcement yesterday, Young Labour is echoing calls from the education profession to abandon an ideological experiment with New Zealand’s kids.

Young Labour spokesperson Benjamin Ross argues the Minister’s goal of “improving quality teaching” is admirable, but should focus on expertise, skills and experience, not National Standards, performance pay and charter schools. “Hekia Parata has pledged to lift achievement for Maori and Pasifika children, but in blindly pushing through Treasury’s changes she’s shown exactly what she’s here to do. The Minister isn’t in search of a better education system for New Zealanders, she’s in search of a cheaper one.” (more…)

Labour’s Tertiary Plan a Clear Contrast

7 Oct, 2011 by admin

Young Labour welcomes the release of Labour’s tertiary education policy which will give students a clear alternative to the failed approach of the current National Government.

“Labour today announced it would increase university funding, reinstate universal students’ association membership to protect students’ associations, retain the fees maxima scheme to keep fees down, and reinvest in adult education and apprenticeships” says Young Labour President, Ella Hardy. National continues to let down students

28 Sep, 2011 by admin

Students and concerned members of the public gathered together today at Parliament in a final attempt to call on the National Government to reject the controversial Voluntary Student Membership Bill that has its Third Reading today.

Ella Hardy, Young Labour President says that “today is a sad day for students as we see the passage of legislation that will work against students and severely damage the future of their Students’ Associations. The support these associations provide to students will be irrevocably damaged.” (more…)

Young Labour suggests budget does great disservice to education sector

21 May, 2010 by Analiese

With more than $12 million a year removed from kindergarten budgets; 3.4 million dollars sliced from schools and community groups and additional funding for fewer than 100 students in each of New Zealand’s universities, Young Labour is seriously concerned that this years budget has been presented at the expense of New Zealand’s youth.

“While many people will be rejoicing about their perceived gain in wealth through tax cuts across the board, Young Labour is gravely concerned about the lack of emphasis that the National Government has put on funding New Zealand’s youth to better themselves through education” said Young Labour President, Analiese Jackson. Young Labour reeling over claims tertiary students show little “respect” to taxpayers

4 May, 2010 by Analiese

Young Labour is outraged over flippant claims made by Prime Minister John Key today in regards to interest free student loans on tertiary study and the alleged lack of “respect” shown by tertiary students.

Whilst featuring in an appearance on the TVNZ’s Breakfast show, Key stated that he would like to see more “respect for taxpayer funding” shown by students and that the “… poor old cleaner that’s out there, working from midnight to six in the morning, … working their socks off to get paid the minimum wage is actually paying taxes to go to the students” which he indicated he believed was economically viable provided that “…students actually tak[e] the process seriously.”

These remarks come as a surprise to members of Young Labour, many of whom are currently or are intending to actively participate in the tertiary sector.

Student Meeting Ambushed by Act on Campus

19 Oct, 2009 by admin

ACT on Campus yesterday ambushed a meeting of the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA) Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting, to further their ideological push against Students’ Associations.

Act on Campus then moved to remove the speaking rights of anyone who did not agree with them and pushed their motion without any debate, showing flagrant and hypocritical disregard for freedom of speech.

Fortunately, ACT on Campus was unable to get their motion passed by the SRC, as the Association solicitor has declared the motion void and unconstitutional. (more…)

Young Labour Welcomes No Interest On Loans

26 Jul, 2005 by admin

Young Labour welcomed today’s announcement by Labour Leader Helen Clark on major improvements to student support policy in the tertiary sector.

“This is a major step forward for all students and graduates. Never again will people have to worry about interest making their loans grow out of control.

“The policy is going to put a huge dent in repayment times for graduates and will encourage them keep their skills in New Zealand. (more…)

Budget Gains for Young People Welcomed

28 May, 2004 by admin

“A budget that delivers for young New Zealanders,” is how Young Labour President Michael Wood describes today’s Budget.

“A key announcement today is the big improvement in access to Student Allowances. This was a key pledge in Labour’s 2002 manifesto, and we are pleased it has been delivered. 12 000 extra students will now receive a full student allowance, and around 24 000 who previously received nothing will get a partial allowance,” Michael Wood said.

“Of course, this is just one step towards the universal student allowance system Young Labour supports and advocates for – but it is a significant move in the right direction.” (more…)

Looking Forward, not Backwards

23 Feb, 2004 by admin

“While Don Brash reminisces about a white-washed 1950s version of New Zealand, Young Labour as the voice of young New Zealanders in the Labour Party prefers to look to the future”, says Michael Wood, President of Young Labour.

“Young Labour has just launched a series of policy platforms that state in broad terms, the direction that Young Labour activists want to see our country head in. Our Education platform is viewable at www.younglabour.org.nz and includes a commitment to principles such as: (more…)

Young Nationals sink into the mire

30 Sep, 1999 by admin

Moana Mackey, President of Young Labour, has met the Young Nat’s latest profession of concern for the wellbeing of students with amusement this evening.

“Clearly the National Party has struggled to find a single flaw in Labour’s student loans policy, resulting in this rather desperate attack on students. What National have implied is that students are irresponsible and undeserving of any assistance. Yet, they claim to be vying for the student vote. If I were them I’d review my tactics.”

“National has caused the $3 billion+ student debt problem – it’s as simple as that. Does anyone really believe that they now intend to fix it? Labour offers the fairest deal for students; National offers only rising fees and rising debts,” Moana Mackey continued. (more…)
