Day of Action Against ACC Cuts

Today Young Labour will attend marches around the country to oppose changes to the ACC sensitive claims criteria that will allow only those diagnosed as having a mental disorder access to ACC funded sexual abuse counseling, says Young Labour President Patrick Leyland.

“ACC exists to help survivors, not to marginalise or traumatise them further. Denying survivors of sexual abuse the help they need because they refuse to be labeled as mentally ill is a disturbing move and we are calling on the Minister for ACC to reconsider this decision,” says Leyland. (more…)

Young Labour Urges support for vulnerable young people over privileged Church leaders

“An ill considered, precious, and surprising foray into a debate about extending basic protections and rights to sex workers”, is how Young Labour President Michael Wood describes the push by a number of religious leaders to have MP’s vote against the final reading of Tim Barnett’s Prostitution Reform Bill this week.

Christchurch Young Labour Supports Youth Budget

Chair of Christchurch Young Labour, Anselm Williams, today welcomed the Labour/Progressive Government’s support for young people in the 2003 budget.

“Initiatives such as $55 million extra early childhood education, and $167 Million for an additional 774 teacher positions above that required for role growth, will have a huge impact on building a positive future for our young people”, Anselm Williams said.

“Christchurch Young Labour is particularly pleased with the additional funding for at risk youth”. (more…)
